RIP Pink Flamingo By: Dan Glaister Friday October 20, 2006 Guardian It seems that the plastic pink flamingo is going the way of dodo. The plastic bird, a kitsch icon that has populated the front lawns of American homes since the 1950s, is about to become extinct. Union Products of Leominster, Massachusetts, which has made the birds since 1957, is going out of business. "The plant's pink flamingo will be an endangered species," Dennis Plante, the company's president, said. The moulded plastic sculpture mounted on wire legs has been reviled and revered in equal measure. An estimated 20m of the plastic birds have been sold since the company began production. The line began when a newly-hired art school graduate named Donald Featherstone made a clay model of a flamingo, copied from a photograph in National Geographic. Mr Featherstone and Mr Plante hope to save the bird from extinction. "It is sad that it is happening, but it may not be dead yet." The two hope to find another company to buy the flamingo moulds and continue production. We hope so too! In memory of our dear Don Featherstone Flamingos. FLAMINGO "FUN" RAISER For several years now, our church has sponsored a Relay for Life team to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Borrowing the idea from some of our customers, we decided to raise money by “flocking” people with flamingos. For a small donation, we would sneak into someone's yard and flock them with 8-12 of the pink plastic birds. Then, for a donation from that household, we would forward the flock to someone else’s yard. We even offered flamingo insurance to anyone who did NOT want to be flocked! Many organizations who use this idea get their picture on the front page of the local newspaper, so it’s great publicity. In 2001, we were delighted to win the coveted “SPIRIT” award for best promoting the Relay—plus we surpassed our goal and raised over $3000! This fun-raising activity has continued in as a tradition in our county ever since.
